Home Remedies In The Treatment Of Constipation

natural remedies 2 Comments

Constipation is a bowel disorder that affects many, up to 15% of the general population. A large majority don’t even try to treat the condition, and a great fraction of those who do do not ask for advice from health professionals. The reluctance to seek advice is understandable, given that constipation involves embarrassing biological functions.

As a result of the stigma attached to this intestinal condition, a large number of people try self-treatment with natural or home-based methods. An enlightened perspective of these natural agents should be obtained to avoid negative health impact. “Natural” is not a term implying hazard-free.

Amongst herbal remedies, the most widespread may be senna. Years ago cascara was another herb that was used, but the FDA put its foot down due to safety concerns. Senna can still be obtained as an herbal substance. Many will find the tea form easy to take and effective, whereas others might find the capsule more convenient. In both forms, senna derives its efficacy from the presence of anthraquinoids, a class of compounds that stimulates the intestines.

While senna is a chemical agent that stimulates the colon to move its contents more quickly, mineral oil is an entirely different kind of agent used as a natural constipation treatment. When taken by mouth, it enters the intestine where it coats the stool. Since oil is a water repellent, the stool becomes protected against loss of fluid. This enables it to remain bulky and therefore move more quickly. Doctor and scientists call this a lubricant laxative which is a bit of a misnomer.

More widespread than either of the above are natural constipation treatments based on fiber. A popular one is psyllium. The psyllium plant is famous for having seeds that contain a lot of fiber. The seeds are usually processed into fine powder form which can then be dissolved. Retailers like nutritional supplement stores carry brand names like Metamucil which are incarnations of psyllium.

Flaxseed or linseed is another well-known natural source of fiber. The seeds are sometimes ground into powder like psyllium. Some research indicates that people taking psyllium can benefit from lower cholesterol. But as is with many scientific results, these bear closer scrutiny and study. Linseed oil is not taken as it has a strong odor.

It’s true of any natural treatment that the advice of a health professional be sought. A physician has much more expertise and knowledge than a layman on whether a natural constipation treatment is reasonable or not. Even if it’s effective, any particular treatment may have warnings on who should and shouldn’t take it. Acquiring more knowledge about the warnings should be of paramount importance for any subject.

Acne Cure Treatment

We rely on our local drugstore for everything from prescription medications to laundry detergent. Undoubtedly, you have also perused the skincare aisle more than once, searching for the right tube of cream to eliminate acne that has reared its head. And perhaps you’ve found that it was a waste of money. An acne cure treatment doesn’t have to mean experimenting with the latest boxed tube of chemicals on the commercial market. Sometimes the simplest measures are the most effective. Take a look at some options below that will cost you next to nothing, and maybe it will save you some pennies the next time you find yourself struggling with a chronic case of pimples.

1. Cleanse your face at the end of the day.

This seems like it ought not to be even mentioned, but being neglectful about cleansing your face is quite common. After a long evening out you might just tell yourself that you don’t need to wash your face that particular night, but remember that make-up is a barrier placed on the skin. Even when you’re dead tired, make sure to wash your face and all the cosmetics and grime that can potentially trigger a breakout.

2. It’s OK to pop a zit (sometimes).

There is an exception to the rule of popping a blemish, but only applies when it’s formed a very visible white head. If none is present, hands off! But otherwise, it is OK to sterilize a needle and puncture the head in order to drain the pus and release pressure. Put on an anti-bacterial ointment on afterwards and it ought to dry up and heal faster than if you had simply let it be.

3. Salt water.

You might have noticed that after an afternoon swimming at the beach, your skin seems to clear up over the next few days. This makes perfect sense because the antibacterial properties of the salt in the sea water helps to disinfect your pores. You can make a salt water tonic at home and use it as a treatment on your skin. Just apply with a cotton ball nightly before bed.

4. Aspirin mask.

This can work both internally as a pill, by reducing inflammation in the body, and also when applied on the surface of the skin because of its beta hydroxy acids. You can buy aspirin in powder form at your drugstore. Add a little water to make a paste and apply to your face as a mask once or twice a week.

5. Ice cubes.

This is the cheapest option and it comes right out of your own freezer. This is particularly effective when used at the fist onset of a pimple. If you sense a dull ache where the lesion is about to make its appearance, immediately reduce the swelling by applying an ice pack. If done in intervals throughout the day, this can drastically reduce the life span of your acne and reduce redness.

Reishi Extract - Scientific Research Synopsis

alternative health 1 Comment

Reishi is the most searched medicinal mushroom on the Internet, used in China for at least two millennia as a panacea to alleviate things from everyday nuisances like the common cold or skin disorders to terminal conditions such as cancer.

One of the strongest proponents for the use of reishi as a medicinal mushroom is Dr. Fukumi Morishige. He works with the Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine on treating cancer with reishi.

Re-printed in the Chinese Traditional Medicine Part III was a speech by Dr. Morishige that included the case studies listed below.

Born in Japan, Dr. Morishige was unavoidably familiar with reishi long before hearing of its use in cancer treatment. Naturally, he believed the same as any other medically trained professional, that perhaps reishi might yield some marginal results on benign conditions but he felt certain any further claims were surely exaggerated. Not until two of his own cancer patients exhibited signs of remission, which they attributed to their use of reishi, did his curiosity peak.

The first was a 39-year-old female with lung cancer. Several hospitals had given her the same prognosis. The condition was too far progressed; there was nothing they could do to help her. She’d also been having secondary complications to the cancer in the form of edema of the chest cavity. But by the time she came to see Dr. Morishige six months later, those symptoms had completely disappeared. The patient herself insisted the improvement was due to 4 grams of reishi per day.

Next was a young boy with congenital liver cancer. At five years of age, his doctor had told his parents the cancer was terminal and subsequently discontinued treatment. Four years later, the parents took their son to see Dr. Morishige, who was no longer able to find any traces of the cancer. The boy’s parents told Dr. Morishige they’d been administering reishi to their son via his naso-gastric feeding tube. It was after this that Dr. Morishige decided to take a closer look at reishi’s effect on cancer.

Listed below are five of Dr. Morishige’s cases. Reishi and Vitamin C (for side effects) was used:

Case 1: A male patient, 70 years of age, had lost consciousness from a 5 cm brain tumor. Dr. Morishige put him on 6 grams of reishi daily beginning June, 1986. By September, he’d come out of his coma, after which he continued taking 3 grams of reishi per day. Six months later, brain scans revealed that the tumor had shrunk. When it had diminished to 1 cm (0.4 in.), the man left the hospital to go home and live with his family.

Case 2: A 50+ female with metastatic lung cancer and hemoptysis (coughing up blood) began a regimen of 6 gm/day of reishi. Six months later, the tumor had disappeared. And whereas before she had experienced severe shortness of breath, she could now effortlessly climb stairs.

Case 3: Patient with breast cancer that had spread to the bones was in unbearable pain and immobilized below the head. An initial dose of 9 grams of reishi daily was increased to 20 grams per day. Two months later, the woman was pain free and released after demonstrating improvement in her ability to walk.

Case 4: A patient with rectal cancer, which had metastasized to the liver, was administered 6 gm/day of reishi. CT scans taken 6 months later showed tumor shrinkage and patient reported feeling better.

Case 5: A patient with pancreatic cancer and short life prognosis was put on 9 grams of reishi per day, orally, and 30 grams of Vitamin C, intravenously. Twelve months later, he reported that he longer experienced any symptoms and was back to work. He said he’d continued taking 5 grams per day of reishi after leaving the hospital.

Kava Kava

anxiety and panic attacks No Comments

Tired and stressed? Looking for something to relax you? Try kava kava. For a long time, this has been a favored drink for the Fijis, who have discovered how useful kava kava is in helping one unwind and loosen you up (without the dreader hangover!). So drink up. Kava kava is filled with kavalectones. These work with neurotransmitters like GABA, norepinephrine and dopamine. These are neurotransmitters that help in relaxation and the feeling of well-being.

Kava kava helps you deal with insomnia. After a drink of this brew, you can get your zzz?s without so much of an effort, and the kind of sleep you do get is the restful and satisfying kind. The quality of sleep is also improved: you sleep longer and not just more quickly.

Those who are depressed can look into this as part of their treatment: some say that it works basically the same way as diazepam. It gets rid of the blues by improving your moods. You will become less prone to panic attacks, anxiety attacks and palpitations.

Kava kava is also useful for weight loss. Our weight problems mainly stem from our inability to eat in moderate amounts. When our appetite is retrained, as kava kava is able to do, we lose weight since we only eat what we need. What?s more, kava kava gets rid of excess fluids in the body, making our body look more toned and buffed. What’s more, you can use kava kava for your aches and pains. With its muscle relaxant properties, it is able to control muscle spasms and the pain that comes with it. You will find relief for backaches, cramps and pain caused by fibromyalgia. Some even claim that kava kava works better than aspirin.

Other problems that kava kava can alleviate includes urinary tract infections, bladder problems and symptoms caused by menopause. It is also a good aphrodisiac.

Remember that like all things, it is best to take kava kava in moderation. It also has side effects such as loss of muscle control, hypertension and blood clotting problems.

Soothing Massage Chair Treatments

alternative health No Comments

Some you may remember when massage chairs for nothing more than a copy of magic fingers. They only provided vibration massage. Although, vibration is very relieving and penetrates deeply, many other massage treatments have been added to massage chairs. You can now find quite a variety of different and effective massage chair treatments.

Most of us are familiar with the stretching and pulling of muscles. This is usually done by a massage therapist. They are working the stiffer muscles to restore flexibility in relief stiffness. These types of hand movements have been replicated in massage recliners.

Massage chairs are advancing rapidly to replicate mechanical hands. Currently, a roller system is used to provide massage treatments to the back areas. These roller systems are effective and penetrating deeply through the muscle tissue and stretching them also.

The versatility of a roller mechanism is in the variety of massage movements available. These sophisticated roller systems are able to make many different movements. Some typical movements are kneading, swaying, rolling, tapping, chopping, and gripping.

Many of these famous techniques use a combination of movements. These movements are done in particular sequences to deliver the massage treatments. Massage chairs use sophisticated programs to emulate many of these famous massage techniques.

Another important development in massage chairs is the use of sensors. Some massage chairs have three-dimensional body scan capability. This enables them to make a three-dimensional map of your body. The program then uses your specific coordinates to deliver a perfect massage time.

Another popular technology being integrated into massage chairs is air compression. In air compressor is used to pump air to air bags located throughout the chair. These airbags are specially designed for different muscle areas.

Air massage systems have become very popular in many massage chairs. They are very versatile and can be specifically designed to provide unique motions. Compression massage is an effective technique to relieve tight muscles. The squeezing, holding and releasing of a muscle help to reduce its soreness.

One more common feature is now stretching systems. Stretching is routinely used before physical activity. This is very important to keep your muscles and joints flexible. Massage chairs have developed systems to provide stretching.

You can now find lower body stretching systems and some of the high-end massage chairs. These stretching systems are perfect for stretching the lower body. These stretching systems cover and stretch from the hips to the ankles. This is very relieving and soothing.

Many athletes use heat to help reduce swelling. Generally heat is applied after physical activity. It is normally used for short durations to reduce swelling of a specific area and to help but flow. Massage chairs have heaters located throughout different parts of the chair.

Of course, you can still find vibration as an option on most massage chairs. Vibration helps to stimulate the capillary vessels which provides for greater blood flow. It also helps to penetrate deeply through the muscle tissue providing relief.

Massage chairs are operated using a remote control. These remote controls contained both automatic functions and manual program options. The higher and massage chairs have an LCD screen. This uses icons to visually display let the massage chair is doing. Massage chairs have a variety of therapeutic massage treatments. They provide tremendous convenience to get massage treatments on demand.

Shiitake Extract Used in Asia as Cancer Medication

alternative health No Comments

Tell Americans that a dish contains “mushrooms” and their minds automatically jump to button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus), which have been grown commercially in the West since the 1600’s. In contrast, individuals from Far East Asia are far more likely to jump to Shiitake as the most logical ingredient. Shiitake, which has only recently become a common household name in the West, has a long history of commercial cultivation in Asia.

Originating in China, wild Shiitake is also commonly known as Black Mushroom and Chinese Mushroom. The name Shiitake comes from the Chinese Shii Tree, which is the most common host tree. But it can also grow on beeches and oaks. The cultivation of Shiitake in China and Japan goes back at least 1000 years.

What is less known in the West is that in the form of Shiitake extract, this is also the most studied medicinal mushroom of the Orient. The primary focus of research has been on the anti-viral [93] and anti-tumoral [94] properties.

The benefit of using Shiitake mycelium extract as opposed to the mushroom fruit body is that there are compounds in the mycelium that don’t exist in the fruiting body or that may be in much higher concentration in the mycelium.

In fact, the most commonly researched Shiitake extract is known as Lentinula Edodes Mycelia extract, or LEM for short. (Lentinula edodes is the Latin name for Shiitake.) LEM has been reported in various research papers as being anti-bacterial, [98, 99] boosting the immune system, [95, 96, 97] and being anti-tumoral. [100] A study on melanoma found that it killed the mutated melanoma cells but caused no harm to cells that were healthy. [101]

Lentinan is the name of another much researched compound isolated from Shiitake, named after the Latin genus name Lentinula. Lentinan is a polysaccharide that has been found to stimulate the human immune system to combat cancer. [102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110] It is currently used in Asia as an intravenous cancer drug.

Arabinoxylanes of Shiitake extract derived from rice cultivated mycelium have been shown to have powerful anti-viral properties. [111, 112, 113]

Two viruses in particular that have been studied with promising results are herpes simplex type 1 [114] and HIV [115, 116, 117]. It should be mentioned, however, that the previously mentioned Lentinan as an isolated compound does not appear to affect HIV replication. [25]

Additional studies have reported positive results with Shiitake extract in conditions of chronic fatigue syndrome [119] and Candida [118], as well as for septic shock prevention. [120]

In his book Mycelium Running, medicinal mushroom expert Paul Stamets also lists the following areas where research has shown Shiitake extract to have a beneficial effect: Blood Pressure; Blood Sugar; Cholesterol; Kidney Tonic; Liver Tonic; Sexual Potentiator; Stress; Breast Cancer; Liver Cancer; Prostate Cancer. [134]

Note: The statements on this page have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This article is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Never use any herb (or mushroom) except as advised by a licensed medical practitioner.

Avocado Pears For creamy Indulgence

alternative health No Comments

Avocado pears are like ice-cream except not as icy! Rather scoop chilled avocado fruit instead of ice-cream while different varieties vary in taste. Also known as ?alligator pears? due to their alligator-like outer peel feel; avocados have emigrated all the way from America, and are now grown on other continents. Although we may shun avocado pears as they are about 70% fats, they are health if eaten in moderation.

To partly appreciate the value of fats consider Vitamin E and carotenoids as toddlers arriving at the airport. Imagine the airport is our digestive system. It is a busy airport and we need signs to guide us as adults. To be guided to the right areas, toddlers need to hold hands with an adult, and the adults offering hands are the fats. Do not do yourself a disservice by having a severely low fat diet to the point of harm. Rather have a moderately low fat diet but remember you always need fat and there are different types of fat. We can enjoy indulging in something like dips!

There may be a time for dips! Not all of us, but some like to dip while nibbling and snacking at parties although we know they can be unhealthy. However we can mix and serve our own healthy types. Watch others have a dip and dip in; you need not feel you are missing the action of an indulgent treat. Have a healthy treat with smashed avocado pear sprinkled with lemon (to discourage browning) and black pepper for flavour! Then you may try cayenne pepper to give a spike to the palate and tongue! Of course herbs added to your avocado dip give that exotic taste. Let ideas follow your taste buds within a healthy selection.

The avocado fruits are not the highest suppliers of folic acid, a type of B vitamin that protectively keeps away foetal abnormalities (abnormal development of the baby in the womb). We may recommend avocados for pregnancy as is commonly done. Leafy vegetables and grapefruit are great folic acid suppliers. During pregnancy, women may enjoy knowing cabbages have high calcium content and tend to help with ulcers. The avocadoes contain useful levels of Vitamin E and are excellent antioxidant suppliers. Avocados supply glutathione, which protects against ageing and other disease development. During pregnancy the need for calories can increase slightly and avocados serve well to meet those needs.

At the end of the day we can all do with a serving of this fatty fruit. Spread it on bread and other foods. Rather than possibly costly processed spreads try avocado butter for green sandwiches? Spices or herbs scattered on top to flavour it. We are often bombarded by the media with them proclaiming a newly formed margarine as being healthy. While margarine products may contain sterols and sterols (in plants) do protect against harmful cholesterol levels. However margarine is mostly a processed food. It is worth it to try more of Nature?s non-mucked about food to support our body?s health. A slice of toast with a spread of mashed soft buttery avocado pear with sparsely sprinkled salt for taste if you need is simple and elegant. The elegant avocado, rich and creamy in texture, can be scooped up within moderation.

Think Of a Leaf To Beat The Rush For A Sweet

alternative health No Comments

The temptation for something sweet is bound to occur; sometimes we are just sweet chasing yoyo fans. Although some of us are outright ’sweet tooth’ followers others are less inclined for ‘the sweet’ while preferring pungent, bitter, salty or sour tastes. If you are about to take part in sport or have finished a hard physical activity you feel the need to boost up your energy.

The quickest way and tendency to lift energy and give ourselves a sweet taste is through sugar. There are various sources of simple sugar ranging from refined sugar in drinks and snacks or in unrefined forms through fruits. Then there are types of syrups such as maple syrup and indeed maple syrup is highly famous in Canada. In Canada the maple tree enjoys wide recognition and its leaf has been made a national symbol! From the inner sap of the maple tree we derive maple syrup, while maple sugar is processed from the popular maple tree.

Sugar cane and sugar beet are sourced and processed to provide molasses, brown and white sugar. Being high in sugar, syrups may not be what we need sometimes. It can occur that we have the craving for something sweet but do not necessarily need to raise our blood sugar up! It even happens with any lax activity; sitting at the office or lying on a couch at home and not being active may still sprout the craving for something sweet.

Well there is a perfect substance to fill the role. Allow stevia to give you sweetness without concern on calories. It is safe for us and can be used by diabetics with high blood sugar. Stevia can be bought as syrup, in powdered form or as dried leaves. It can be used to replace sugar in hot and cool beverages. Apply it to add a sweeter touch to any food.

South America is the original habitat of stevia and this plant enjoys warm weather but not excessive water! Although this plant does not drink high levels of water, it makes our drinks so sweet and enjoyable! Stevia is actually an herb and we can grow our own stevia! Pick a leaf and chew it for the greatest sweetness you have had! The stevia herb is extremely potent and when used we need only a minor amount as it is far greater in sweet strength than sugar and honey or other syrups. Take a small section of the fresh leaf when you try it.

The level of sweetness varies according to the plants growing conditions. The nutrients in the soil have and do affect the health of plants. When you do plant stevia rely on taking a transplant (a section of the plant) rather than the seeds, which are harder to sprout. It is difficult to imagine that a leaf can be profoundly sweet until you have tried and tasted it for yourself. If you’re fortunate to have this sweet plant nearby, and there may be times when you have a sweet tooth, then you might just pop in a green stevia leaf.

Acne Alternative Treatment - The Chinese Mode

natural remedies No Comments

Did you know there is a Chinese acne alternative treatment, that is not only natural and harmless, but it works too? As you may well be aware of, the Chinese have an number of remedies for just about any health condition, including acne.

Their cures go back millenia, and they still are a common choice for acne sufferers. As opposed to American and European beliefs, the Chinese think that acne is caused by toxins and heat in your blood and digestive organs.

For example, doesn’t your acne always seem to crop up around your chin, forehead and nose? Well the Chinese believe that these areas are linked to your digestive system. So your acne appears because of toxins or problems with your stomach or intestines.

You will observe that a Chinese acne cure home remedy also sustains appropriate diet, first-class hygiene, taking supplements, and then keeping the correct program. You ought to use extra virgin olive oil when cooking because saturated and incompletely hydrogenated fats are sources of tissue damage and redness in the body.

With a Chinese acne alternative treatment it is also believed that eating non- or low-fat dairy products is much better on the digestive system. Things you should avoid include anything packaged, which covers many of our favorite foods such as crackers, cookies, potato chips, and so on. You should also supplement your diet with foods like flax seed and salmon, both rich in omega-3 fats.

However, what you want to stay clear of is omega-6 fats. These would cover things like soybean, corn, sunflower, and cottonseed oils, all oils that encourage inflammation. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is also promoted by the Chinese as an effective acne cure treatment.

The reason is that these foods are high in vitamins that have been proved to eliminate acne. Fiber, which is beneficial to a person’s digestive system is also encouraged, along with foods high in beta-carotene and vitamin A. The Chinese at home acne treatment also supports the consumption of protein and lower carbohydrates, again going back to a better digestive system.

The result is that the Chinese have found out that eating provisions that heat up the body like garlic, some spices, and coffee are damaging and can only cause a flare-up of acne. The Chinese also encourage drinking lots of hygienic, purified water. Actually, while most professionals advise around two quarts of water, the Chinese say for dirt free acne, you ought to drink up to four quarts. This facilitates the body by flushing out harmful toxins, consequently making it a straightforward but helpful acne alternative treatment.
