The 3 “W” Tips For Quitting Smoking Naturally - Preparation Is Everything

6:57 am quit smoking

The three tips for quitting smoking naturally presented here are not intended to get you over every rough period that you will experience along the way. They are merely presented to get you as prepared as possible for whatever comes along the way. It is a difficult experience to go through, but it is much cheaper and more effective than trying to quit with nicotine replacement products.

First, ask yourself “Why?” Why are you really doing this? Get past the superficial reasons such as your spouse wants you to and really dig deep here.

The fear of cancer can be intense but it is usually not powerful enough to bring long term motivation. Wanting to prevent disease so you live long enough to meet your grandchildren would be more of a personal reason that could get you through difficult or tempting moments.

Next, consider “When.” Of course, there will never be a completely peaceful time in your life where the stars just magically line up for your quitting. You just don’t want to start this process when you are under an unusual amount of stress or things are temporarily chaotic. Wait until things calm down some unless you think the nature of the stress will actually help in some way.

The third W is “what if.” You need to have some alternative behaviors in place so start asking yourself what if questions. What if you are at work and something stressful happens and you really want a drag? What if your girlfriend leaves you? What if you come home alone one afternoon and the urge just hits?

Think of all the situations you could be in that would lead to intense cravings and have alternative actions that will release some of the pressure.

You may decide to go for a walk after dinner instead of lighting up as usual or take your kids to the park as a distraction on weekends. Other ideas are to exercise, talk on the phone, or take up a new hobby that keeps your hands busy.
