Zanax is more commonly known as Xanax. Its generic name is alprazolam. There is a range of conditions that this medication may be prescribed to treat. They can include anxiety disorders or anxiety that is related to depression, insomnia or panic disorders. Some of these uses are what the drug was designed for, others are “off-label” uses. An off-label use is the use of a medication to treat a medical condition which the medication was not originally designated to treat. Often a drug has been approved for use in one situation and doctors realise that it has a therapeutic effect on an unrelated condition.
Zanax is one of a number of drugs called benzodiazepines. Other drugs in this family include Valium (diazepam), Librium (chlordiazepoxide) and Ativan (lorazepam). Each of these medications works in generally the same manner and has many of the same side effects. It is a good idea to know how the medications you are taking can affect you before you begin taking it so that you are not surprised by how you may feel.
All of the medications in the benzodiazepine family work by depressing the central nervous system (CNS). This means that it can affect other things controlled by the CNS including co-ordination. Other areas of the CNS that can be affected include the limbic system (which controls emotion and behaviour), the thalamic system (which regulates sleep) and the hypothalamic system (which controls appetite, thirst and body temperature).
Side effects of Zanax can include drowsiness and fatigue. Weight gain is also a possibility with this drug since some people’s report an increased appetite and lower activity levels. If you are using Zanax you may also be dizzy, experience co-ordination problems and have memory issues. Things like dizziness and co-ordination problems can be made worse if you are also drinking alcohol.
Because of the systems which are affected by Zanax, side effects can include drowsiness and overall fatigue. There can also be weight gain reported with the use of this medication. This may be due to an increased appetite and a simultaneous decrease in appetite levels. There are also a range of other side effects which can range from dry mouth or excessive salivation, feelings of warmth, constipation and sexual side effects. This is because these bodily functions are controlled by the central nervous system. One concern that many people have is that the medication can be addictive and you should be aware of this when you start using Zanax.
There are a few medical conditions which will make you unable to take Zanax. If you have any of them you should tell your doctor before you begin taking this medication. Health conditions include depression, a history of drug or alcohol abuse, glaucoma, cirrhosis of the liver or other liver problems, kidney disease or kidney failure or lung or breathing problems.
A final condition which can make you ineligible to take Zanax is pregnancy. If you are pregnant it is critical that you tell your doctor before using Zanax. This is because the medication can be passed to the foetus and cause problems such as dependency and symptoms of withdrawal in the baby after birth. If you are breastfeeding you also should not use this medication since it can be passed to the baby through the breast milk.
If you suffer from anxiety disorders such as panic attacks, Zanax can be a safe and effective way to treat your symptoms. You can work with your doctor to make an informed and effective decision.
