Safety
concerns in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy can be a very relaxing and pampering treat for you
especially if you live a stressful and busy life. Using
aromatherapy products such as essential oils, candles, bath and
body products and the like will definitely give you a soothing
experience only if you know how to use them properly.
Since aromatherapy products contain essential oils that are
highly flammable, make sure that you conduct thorough research
first before using any of these. The following are some of the
safety tips you can use to ensure that you will not encounter
any accident or complication when using aromatherapy
products.
1. Proper amount of essential oils. To avoid skin
complications such as rashes or burns, make sure that you use
the proper amount of essential oil. To know how much you should
use on application or in diffusion, make sure that you read the
label carefully. You can also ask from experts or aroma
therapists if you know any.
2. Never use undiluted essential oils directly on skin.
Since essential oils contain pure plant extracts and other
ingredients, it can be harmful to the skin. Before using any
essential oil or products that have essential oils, make sure
that you have your skin checked first by a reputable
dermatologist or skin expert. By doing this, you will have an
assessment on your own skin and you will know which ones are
harmful to and those that are not.
3. Know your skin type and your allergic reactions. Every
individual has different reactions to certain chemicals. This
is especially true in using essential oils and other
aromatherapy products this is because some oils cause allergic
reactions to sensitive skin. The basic skin test that you can
do especially when using essential oils for the first time is
place a small amount of diluted oil parts of the body that have
sensitive skin such as the wrist or arms. If there is a
reaction like rashes or redness, don't use it because chances
are, you have an allergic reaction to the product.
4. Pregnant women should not
use essential oils. Although not all essential oils and
aromatherapy products contain harmful elements, it is best to
not use any of these to avoid complications with the fetus.
Always remember that essential oils are quickly absorbed by the
body and go directly to the bloodstream. People with other
health conditions should also veer away from using essential
oils and other aromatherapy products without consulting an
expert or their physicians.
